Don’t Just Stand There. Do Something.

As you know, hundreds of rockets have been fired into southern Israel from Gaza over the past several days.  School is cancelled.  For many, ordinary life has come to a standstill.  At this time it is important to teach our children essential Jewish values:

  • Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh: All Jews are responsible for one another
  • Pikuach Nefesh: The preservation of life is of highest importance
  • Lo Ta’amod: Do not stand idly by when someone’s life is in danger

There are two ways you can help children!  Join JNF in an emergency campaign to help the children of Sderot and the Firefighters of Israel.

1.
Connect your children or students to their peers in Israel.  Support the JNF Indoor Recreation Center in Sderot.  (Go to jnf.org/emergencyrelief)

There are more than 1,000,000 Israelis in bomb shelters, but there is only one place where you can still hear laughter of chldren, where children can still be children and play without fear during this crisis:  the 21,000-square-foot JNF Sderot Indoor Recreation Center, which doubles as a state-of-the-art bomb shelter.

  • JNF is working with the mayor of Sderot to keep the center open 24 hours a day
  • The center is serving as a home base for military personnel
  • Sleeping arrangements are being made
  • Services for seniors are being offered
  • Green Horizons, a JNF partner, will provide entertainment
  • Food and drink will be provided

2.
Teach your students about first responders in Israel.  Support Friends of Israel Firefighters.  (Go to jnf.org/emergencyrelief)

  • Firefighters have been asked to be on call 24 hours a day
  • They are the first on the scene to put out fires from the rocket attacks and respond to rocket-related accidents
  • Support the ongoing need for upgraded firefighting equipment
  • Send food to fire stations
  • Let the firefighters know they’re not alone

As the situation grows more acute in Israel and Jews are threatened by violent anti-Semitism worldwide, HaGaon haRav Elyashiv, one of the leaders of world Jewry, has issued a call for the daily recitation of Tehillim (Psalms) by every Jew, regardless of background and affiliation. Specifically, the rav has urged Jews to devote at least 15 minutes a day to this form of prayer for Klal Yisrael and to recite Psalms 20, 83, 121, 130 and 142 during this time.

With prayers for peace, may the strength of the unity of the Jewish people protect us.
